Our roots and bloodlines originate from Black Velvet Angus Farm, founded in 1956 by Robert and Faye Boller, Deb’s parents.
In 1956, when Deb was 2 years old, they purchased big, useful registered females, and upon visiting with another prominent breeder at the time, who said, “I couldn’t use any of these females, because they are not small and fancy enough”, meaning they were too big for the time. So they were fortunate enough to start with the right kind of cattle.
They fed out their cattle in those days, keeping only the top gaining bulls and replacement females, and kept weights and records, even before the performance AHIR program started.
The first major herd sire was purchased at Big Oak Stock Farm, Cawker City, Kansas, and was named Bardolier of Big Oak 157. His progeny in turn crossed very well on RGA Eileenmere 44, the bull most of their herd stemmed from. He was a great female producer and was used, along with his sons, to raise line bred cows that were the mainstream of their cowherd.
Searching for bulls to continue with, they went to Canada, purchasing several bulls during the years to come. They were Pride Valley Eston 16D, Colossal Revolution 30-72, Southolm Bar Lad 58D and Wildwillow Bar Lad 30K (from the Peace River Country). In 1974 they acquired Marshal Pride 234 from Erdmann Ranch in South Dakota and followed him with Sir Williams Revolt 4095, both great female producers. Finally they came across the path of a bull – the ultimate of them all – Byergos 36 “Prophet”. He had it all – performance, style and show ring winnings all rolled into one. The proof was in his daughters – size, great matrons, great milkability and femininity with perfect udders.
To find a bull to cross on these “Prophet” daughters they went back to the Erdmann Ranch in 1981 and purchased “Blackjack” or Cracker Jack Baros 381.
Performance was stressed in their operation and the entire herd was on the AHIR performance records program. They exhibited bulls in the carload and pen shows at the National Western Stock Show in Denver for several years.
All the years, work, frustration and worries it takes to build a herd was all worth it when they were presented with a calf like they had in 1982. He was “Black Velvets Fantasy” with a weaning weight ratio of 147, 205 day weight of 843 lbs., yearling weight of 1245 lbs., and sold a 2/3 interest for $11,500 to Oregon. He was sired by Byergos 36 Prophet and his dam was sired by a son of RGA Eileenmere 44 they called “Ramrod” and with Bardolier of Big Oak 157 in the bottom of the pedigree.
Deb started her herd again in 1992, always buying some of the best from her mother’s great cow herd. A lot of the cows in Richard and Deb’s herd have ancestry from these great lineages. Cows with great maternal qualities have always been maintained and herd bulls have been selected with great maternal qualities.
Richard Bartholomew and Deb were married July 26, 2003, and have 6 children and 9 grandchildren, with 1 more on the way. Richard’s oldest son, Seth, returned home to help with the farming and cattle, and has a special passion for the cattle. Richard, Seth and Deb have all gone through AI training and now have an AI program that includes most of the herd. They are committed to raising quality Angus cattle with balanced EPD’s, eye appeal, great maternal qualities and great dispositions. But most of all, the cattle have to be able to function and thrive in their environment, making a profit for us and our customers. |
